Magadheera will pull on

One threat that Magadheera faced was the imminent release of Malanna, both the films were set to clash at many places including Chennai and Bangalore. But with the bad show of Malanna, Aruns will surely heave a sigh of relief.

Now, Magadheera would be able to easily carry on with its march forward for a bigger box-office success.

All this would mean a few more cores of profit for Allu Arvind and his team. Indeed Magadheera's luck is shining in spite of the controversies it is embodied in!

Magadheera - Royal but regular…
[Wednesday, July 22, 2009]

The most talked about movie of this season happens to be ‘Magadheera’ and it is gearing up to hit the screens during the end of this month. Meanwhile, the audio release happened grandly and the tunes were composed by the veteran M M Keeravani. Slated to be a magnum opus from Geetha Arts, let us see how the songs have been in this one.

Bangaru Kodipetta….

This is the highlight song of the album and it is the remix of a number that came many years ago in the blockbuster hit ‘Gharana Mogudu’. The voices have been given by Ranjith and Shivani. The music is very much like the original, Keeravani has provided the inclusion of the croak from a hen but otherwise, the tune has been melodious. Lyricist Bhuvana Chandra came up with average lyrics. Since Chiranjeevi will be seen shaking his leg for few seconds, the scene on the screen would be appealing.

Dheera Dheera Dheera…

This is slated to be the hottest number of the album, but then there is a lack of upbeat mood and though the drum beats are constant which gave a good start, the tempo does not go beyond that and Keeravani has not been able to show his mettle. Nikhita Nigam was melodious with her voice and has added life to the song. Bhuvana Chandra penned substantial lyrics and the words fitted to the rhythm of the song. A slow melody with a mild touch, this will pass off.

Panchadara Bomma….

An upbeat and racing song, the film has got a positive feel and this happens to be a duet with voices of Anooj Guruwara and Reeta, they shared a good rapport. Keeravani showed his power with a good mix of both folk and western instruments, violin was apt. Bhuvana Chandra gave a potion of romance and he adds poetry in his words. This is a decent number and will get attention.

Jorsey…..

This is ideally a dance number with masala attached to it but the vocals were dominated by the Bhangra king Daler Mehndi and he is joined by Geetha Madhuri. The music was not upto the mark in this one and Keeravani missed his touch in this one. The song was energetic due to the high pitch but then it doesn’t have the foot thumping tone to it. Bhuvana Chandra penned his words in an orderly manner but there is not much to really get up and unwind on the floor.

Naakosam Nuvvu….

This is a melody number that goes with a nice mix of beats along with music, this duet has been sung by the duo of Deepu and Geetha Madhuri. The music and the lyrics have been done by M.M.Keeravani himself and he has joined the music with western beats along with English lyrics. This is a very trendy number and given the backdrop of the film, this will come across as a different song from the rest of the album.

Rolling Titles Music….

This can be viewed as the title song of the movie and there is a strong element of a rap number with racing beats. The voice has been given by Jassie Gift and even this time, M.M.Keeravani has penned the lyrics and composed the music for the number. But then, this is a song that arrives during the titles, so not much can be given in terms of visual appeal. The lyrics were just about okay and the music was consistent, but the good thing is that the energy levels were high and provided good momentum to the song.

Overall, the songs have not been upto the hype that was created and despite the presence of big names like Keeravani, Daler Mehndi, it has come across as a regular album. But then, the key factor here is the presentation of these songs and if they are grand and captivating the audio graphs might go up. This is a mix of melody, mass and romantic numbers so all genres of audience will find their songs here.

Buzz up!
Supreme Raju had bought the overseas rights of director SS Rajamouli's Magadheera and released it with 25 overseas prints in 40 locations. Speaking at a press meet at the Film Nagar Cultural Centre in Hyderabad on Friday, Supreme Raju had said that Magadheera was the first Telugu film to be released with 25 prints overseas."

Magadheera is technically brilliant

C 1600 Aravalli, the kingdom of Udaygarh. Two lovers die; one a warrior and the other a princess, confessing their love for each other. Their love remains unfulfilled. And the person who cremates them -- Sher Khan (Srihari) says aloud that they will be reborn again to unite. Fast forward 400 years, and lo, they are.

A reincarnation story is not often seen in Telugu cinema and SS Rajamouli uses this theme for Ram Charan Teja's second film Magadheera.

Well, Rajamouli's Magadheera, a fantasy tale should be seen on many grounds- it's a magnum opus production with great technical work. It's a high-budget extravaganza which shows in almost every frame. It's directed by SS Rajamouli, one of the top directors in the Telugu industry. It's got fine music by MM Keeravani, brilliant camera work by Senthil, good art direction by Ravinder, good styling and costumes by Rama Rajamouli and is edited well by Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao. The graphics are excellent for a Telugu movie. Overall, the movie is a mainstream one with good packaging.

The tale goes back and forth into the past and the present. The period, the contemporary look and styling of the film is in sync with the depiction. The accomplished and skilled warrior Bhairava (Ram Charan Teja) wants to marry the princess of Udaygarh Mitra (Kajal Agarwal) ) and even wins her in the race against competitor Randev (who is the senapati and the villain, the traitor who allows the enemy Sher Khan into the kingdom) but bows down to the wishes of her father and does not. Bhairava is so consummate a warrior that he even killed 100 warriors of Sher Khan (who has been over riding kingdoms before he eyed Udaygarh) before dying like a true warrior. Bhairava's valour impressed Sher Khan so much that he even cremated him.

Cut to modern times where Harsha (Charan) rubs his fingers against a girl in a white churidar and feels a vibration, and realises it's the princess. He remembers his past birth and goes in search of this girl who after a chase reveals her name as Indu (Kajal).

Randev is reborn as Raghuvir, Indu's cousin. Raghuvir sees Indu and is smitten by her. Will the lovers reunite in this birth?

As far as story is concerned, there's nothing great or new about Magadheera. It's the production and direction which makes up for this. Rajamouli's deft direction plugs the loopholes and knowing the pulse of the audience crafts a mainstream film.

In reincarnation stories it's best to forget reason and logic and see the story for one can never question and find answers to them. What's strange is that only the boy remembers and feels the vibrations, and not the girl. There is some kind of similarity to Arundhati in terms of the reincarnation element of the story and the presence of the Aghora.

Keeravani's music sounds good on screen. The Bangaru Kodipetta song with Chiru doing a cameo with Mumaith Khan is sure to draw audiences. Keeravani and Kalyani Malik's background score is also in tune and does not overshadow the image. Kim Sharma's [ Images ] item number seemed unwarranted though.

Senthil's camera pans a landscape which is 'period' and 'present' in a beautiful way. The sepia tones and the white stark landscapes against a blue sky are stunningly captured. The difference in colour tones mark the periods well.

The magnificent sets created by Ravinder especially of Udaygarh are a treat to watch on screen, plus his art direction. Rama's Rajamouli's ensemble's and the styling is rich and elegant and worth a watch. Her effort shows off on screen.

Ram Charan seems to be a chip of the old block when it comes to dancing. For, he is very flexible and dances well like his dad. He's got a lot to do in this film from horse riding to sword fighting to singing and dancing. He's done them all pretty well though one felt that he needs to hone his skills of acting further particularly in expressing emotions. Also, one feels he need to have more josh to be a warrior -- at times one felt he was rather subdued.

Kajal Agarwal was quite a surprise package. She was sweet and charming and looked like an 'ethereal' princess. She carries off both the roles fairly well. Srihari was at his usual best performing both roles (later he's born as Solomon-the fisherman).

The song with all the technicians making their appearance at the end is innovative and Rajamouli should be appreciated for this.

Rajamouli has packaged Magadheera well as a mainstream film. Have a look at it for its technical brilliance.

Magadheera’s USA Victory

Out of the many Telugu films that release in the US, Magadheera is one of the only few to do well there. It has set a new record at the box office with a collection of Rs.1.75 crore in the first week, surpassing the Pawan Kalyan starrer Jalsa, which collected Rs.1.5 crore in the first week.
The overseas rights of Magadheera have been bought by Supreme Raju and it has released with 25 overseas prints in 40 locations. The film is getting a positive response from all over the US. In India, the film grossed Rs.8 crores in the first four days, creating a new record.
However, a controversy has come up over Magadheera for using a few lines of folk singer and balladeer Vangapandu Prasada Rao in a song without his permission.
According to Vangapandu, the lines from ‘Yem pillado eldaam vasthava’ are being shown with vulgar scenes and they are actually part of a song “Paita naligithey ma amma oppukuntadeti’, written for Ardharathri Swatantram, directed by T.Krishna. Vangapandu has demanded for removing the lyrics from the song. But as of now, there hasn’t been any response from Magadheera’s director Rajamouli and producer Allu Aravind.

Review: Magadheera

Several stories came on the Telugu screen with reincarnation as the backdrop. Right from Mooga Manasulu these tales were little more than love stories. The latest among them is Magadheera. However, the directorial ability of Rajamouli has made the film memorable as it has no shades of the earlier films. He has made the best use of the latest technological advancements like FX and SFX, Digital Intermediate and of course, computer graphics. The other name to be mentioned for this sensational film is the budding hero Ramcharan, who accepted a challenging role, which artistes shy away from in general. He showed extreme ease in both the roles.

The story dates back to four centuries, to be precise, 1609 AD. There is a kingdom called Udaygadh in Rajasthan ruled by a king (Saratbabu). Mitravinda (Kajal Agarwal) is his only daughter. Ranadev Bhalla (Dev Gill) is her brother-in-law. Kala Bhairava (Ramcharan) is a warrior who trains the army of the kingdom. He is also the personal caretaker of the princess. Ranadev eyes Mitravinda and want to bequeath the kingdom by marrying her. But the princess loses her heart to Bhairava. In order to win her hand, both Ranadev and Bhairava take part in a contest and Bhairava emerges the winner. Ranadev turns traitor and joins hands with Sher Khan. He invades the kingdom and kills the king. Later, Ranadev and Sherkhan reach the place where Bhairava and Mitravinda were offering prayers to Lord Siva. Sher Khan challenges Bhairava to save his life from his men. Bhairava courageously attacks and kills 100 soldiers. Sher Khan bows his head to Bhairava and accepts defeat. But Ranadev kills Mitravinda and Bhairava. Just before death, Bhairava kills Ranadev too.

All these people are some 400 years later, i.e., in 2009. Harsha (Ramcharan) is a stunt lover and ekes out his living by taking part in bike races and stunts. When he touches Indu's hand, he feels an electric connection. He starts looking for her as the touch reminds him of something. Indu s father fights a legal battle for Udaygadh kingdom as it was his ancestral property. His brother-in-law enjoys the property illegally. The latter s son Ranadhir (Dev Gill) is spell-bound by Indu s beauty and goes to their home and promises to return the entire property with the view of marrying Indu. Ranadhir s guru Ghora (Rao Ramesh) tells him that he just cannot win Indu as long as Harsha is alive. On learning that Indu s father accepted her love towards Harsha, Ranadhir kills him and implicates Harsha in the murder. Later, Ranadhir takes Indu away to Udayagiri. Though Harsha tries to explain the truth to Indu, she doesn't believe him. In the process, Harsha drops from the helicopter and falls in a pond only to be saved by Solomon (Srihari). Now it was Harsha's turn to prove his innocence and remind her of their reincarnation.

Ramcharan has excelled in all the departments and perfectly matched expectations. His macho image suited the warrior s character well. He showed ease in action scenes as well as dances. He has improved himself a lot since his first film and the director moulded the character very well. One could imagine how many nights he must have struggled to etch the character with such precision. It is no wonder the director took so much time for shooting the film.

Kajal Agarwal is also an asset to the film. She is very apt for the character of the princess. Besides filling the glamour slot, she has proven that given a chance, she too can give an excellent performance. The other notable character is of Bollywood artiste Dev Gill. He was able to show the cruelty and crookedness in his eyes and facial expressions. However, his character had similarities of the villain in the recent release Arundhati. Action choreography by Peter Haynes and Ram-Laxman is extraordinary. All the other artistes including Saratbabu, Rao Ramesh, Surya and others did justice to their roles.

All the departments behind the scenes have ably assisted the director to make this film a celluloid wonder. First among them is cinematographer Senthilkumar. He has perfectly understood what the director wants and captured every finest point. Especially the fights that come in the flashback episode, the moving of arrows, the movement of the javeline, the sword fights, the picturisation of Udaygadh fort would remain a celluloid wonder and remind the audiences of watching a Hollywood film. Next comes the art director. He decorated the Udaygadh fort, the Bhairavakona set with a mammoth Shiva statue and the pathway to the Bhairavakona perfectly. Editing by Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao proved his seniority and he was able to match the graphics and the camera shots perfectly to the core. Hats off to the director for his work in coordinating all the 24 crafts in the film industry and it was his dream to bring a Telugu film on the lines of a Hollywood film. His ability to pen the screenplay could be seen in every frame and every scene of the film.

Music by Manisharma is however, less than wondrous. Though the songs are melodious, one can't help concentrating on the visual feast of the choreography. The first song, which is a remix of Chiranjeevi s Bangaru Kodipetta was excellently choreographed and Ramcharan outsmarted his father in dances.

The only draw back in the film is comedy. Despite the presence of top comedians like Brahmanandam and Sunil, none of them could tickle the funny bone. But the audiences did not care for the comedy as the film had them spellbound.

Magadheera song turns controversial

Ramcharan’s Magadheera starring Kajal opposite him, has landed in a controversy over the use of a tune and sonnet of a popularly admired song in a duet.

Revolutionary writer and well-known balladeer Vangapandu Prasadarao alleged that his celebrated song - Em Pillo Yeldam Vastavaa, Em pillado Yeldam Vastavaa (Oh lass, Oh lad shall we go...) was written 40 years ago, to entertain and enthuse youth to join the Naxalite (currently Moist) movement.

Vangapandu, 75, threatened to sue Allu Aravind the producer and director S.S. Rajamouli for using his sonnet and tune in the film song and misrepresent a revolutionary cause in an obscene way.

Talking to media persons at Bobbili in Vizianagaram district, he said the song was used without his consent and knowledge and shown in bad taste. He demanded immediate deletion of the song sequence from the film and also an apology from the film-makers.

Controversy rages over Magadheera song

Controversy rages over Magadheera song
VIZIANAGARAM: A new controversy has raged over PRP president Chiranjeevi's son Ramcharan Teja's new movie `Magadheera' over usage of a few lines
of folk singer and balladeer Vangapandu Prasada Rao in a song without his permission.

Vangapandu is livid that his 40-year-old folk song, `Em pillado eldaamostavaa... Sikakulamlo seema kondaki... Telangana Komarayya kondaki....Rayalaseemalo raalu kondaki,' has been used by film director SS Rajamouli and producer Allu Aravind in a song with vulgar picturisation without taking his consent.

In fact, Vangapadu, a native of Chinna Merangi village in Vizianagaram district, was arrested for singing the song in 1980s. Vangapandu demanded the film producer and the director to remove the lines immediately, failing which he would approach the court.

"My song was an inspiration to the revolutionary movement way back in the '80s. But it was misused and the scenes of the film song are vulgar," Vangapandu told TOI on Wednesday. He charged the producer and the director with degrading the inspirational song.

"They must apologise to the revolutionaries for misusing a great song and remove the lines from the song," Vangapandu warned.

Magadheera ‘shocks’ two to death

Magadheera ‘shocks’ two to death

WARANGAL: Two were electrocuted and 18 others sustained burns reportedly due to a short-circuit at a cinema screening Magadheera, the muchpublicised film of megastar Chiranjeevi’s son Ramcharan Teja, in Kazipet tonight.

The incident occurred around 9.30 p.m. at the booking counter of mini-Bhavani Talkies where scores of people were standing in a queue for the second-show tickets.

An electric pole stands right next to the counter which is actually an asbestos shed.

Power is supplied from the pole to the theatre through a wire that passes from above the counter. Eye-witnesses alleged that a wire was on the ground as well.

M Praveen Kumar and G Ganesh were the first to receive the shock. Those, who were in contact with them, followed next. Many in the queue collapsed and all hell broke loose.

Praveen, a native of Hanamkonda, was a final-year MCA student of the National Institute of Technology in Warangal. Both Praveen and Ganesh were rushed to a nearby private hospital where they were declared brought dead.

The 18 others were admitted to the MGM Hospital. The condition of two of them is said to be critical. Warangal Superintendent of Police Shahnawaz Qasim and other officials rushed to the theatre and sealed it. Surprisingly, though utter chaos prevailed outside and two were dead, the second-show was in progress by the time the SP arrived.

The police registered a case against the theatre management. “Action will be initiated against the theatre management if they were found to be negligent,” the SP said.

Ramcharan Teja’s Magadheera has already hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The film-makers were first accused of lifting a line from a folk song penned by Vangapandu Prasada Rao. On Friday, a writer, Chary, alleged that the film was a carbon copy of his novel Chanderi.
